The best natural way to reduce blood sugar 〰️

When blood sugar levels begin to rise, you may feel lethargic, thirsty, upset and even nauseous.

If you struggle with elevated blood sugars, there are a few tactics to try out.

The best way of making sure you blood glucose doesn’t go high is to avoid letting it increase substantially in the first place, this can be achieved by improving insulin sensitivity, limiting foods that you know will cause your blood sugar to elevate above the physiological range and if you use insulin, making sure your dosing strategy is correct.

However, if your blood sugar goes high, then having tactics to improve glucose clearance from the blood stream is essential. If you are a person living with T1DM or you have T2DM but are insulin dependant, then this is the most potent treatment for lowering blood glucose.

In my experience as someone living with T1DM, I find that a corrective dose of insulin is not always necessary, in fact a little physical activity can do the trick, so here are my top 3 best exercises to decrease blood glucose instantly!

  1. Go for a walk
Simply lacing up your sneakers and getting 5-10 minutes of walking can greatly improve your blood glucose levels. If you don’t have easy access to going for a walk you could try walking up and down stairs for 5 minutes. If you have any mobility issues I would suggest chair marching, which is highlighted below.

  2. Jumping Jacks
This exercise is so valuable because you’re using more muscles than simply walking. The more muscle mass you use, the more glucose clearance will happen. Depending on your level of physical fitness and mobility, this option may be limited, and if so I recommend a modified version where you sit on a chair, march your legs up and down while also lifting your arms up and down by your sides, like a traditional jumping jack. This modified version will still be calling on a sufficient amount of muscle mass to help clear glucose from the blood stream.
2-5 minutes of jumping jacks can easily do the trick to bring your blood glucose levels down.

  3. Body weight squats
Doing a simple body weight squat is an excellent movement pattern that using a significant amount of your muscles to help clear blood glucose. The modified version of this exercise is the sit to stand using a chair, simply get up from the seated position, sit down, and repeat. If you have issues with the sit to stand you can always place another chair in front of yourself, or of to the side to allow your arms to assist with getting up.
Doing this for 2-5 minutes can help to decrease blood glucose levels.

Personally I have used all of these methods to decrease or even stabilize my blood sugars when they begin to skew. Beyond the use of physical activity I have a standard protocol I use and recommend for my patients, including hydration, supplementation, herbal remedies and mindfulness. You can learn more about this protocol when you book a session with me below.
